The Metamorphosis of Butterflies

According to the student edition of Encyclopedia Britannica, metamorphosis is “a series of dramatic changes in an organism’s body shape and structure as it develops after hatching or being born.” The transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly is just one example of a metamorphosis that occurs in thousands of insect species and amphibians.

As the diagram [above] shows, the complete metamorphosis of butterflies and moths involves four stages: 1. the egg, 2. the larva (caterpillar), 3. the pupa (also called chrysalis or cocoon) and 4. the adult.

I really really like the whole look and feel of this shoot.  The lighting, styling, posing, location…everything is great.  And I can’t believe how much these kids have grown!

Buried a thousand feet below Naica mountain in the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico, this cave was discovered by two miners excavating a new tunnel for a commercial lead and silver mine.

Known as Mexico’s Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals) it contains some of the world’s largest known natural crystals–translucent beams of gypsum as long as 36 feet and softer than human nails. The longest crystal measures 37.4 feet and likely began growing some 600,000 years ago.

Holy. Shit.
